Negative Ions

Lenard (1915) found that when water is atomized (e.g. on impact of a water droplet), negative and positive charges are separated. He discovered that molecules which are torn from the surface of the water bear a negative charge (small negative ions) whereas large drops or the entire mass of water are positive. This provided an unexpected explanation for the refreshing, invigorating effect of residences close to a waterfall or spring, or even after rainfall, but there are other ways in which negative ions help.

It is well known that the consumption of more alkaline foods, such as fruits and vegetables, is beneficial to human health. If the body has an acidic PH balance, it can make the body weak and susceptible to sickness. Acidification of the blood, which is caused by the loss of electrons, can be prevented by the introduction of negatively-charged ions, which contain an abundant amount of electrons. This improves the body's immunity and resistance to illnesses. This is the reason negative ion-related products are becoming increasingly popular nowadays.

Metabolism, which is the process of acquiring nutrients from the blood and excreting waste out of the body, is extremely important to the health of human cells. The more negative ions there are in the blood, the more efficient the cell's metabolism process becomes. Through an experiment on electric ions and the permeability of the cell membrane,  scientists found that when positively-charged ions were permeated into the surface of the skin, its pores and sweat glands began to contract. However, when negative ions were permeated into the surface of the skin, its pores and sweat glands expanded, which demonstrates an improved ability to sweat and expel toxins, indicating good metabolism of the cell membranes.
